I've heard hundreds of adults express regret that they didn't learn another language when they had the opportunity as a child but............ I've never heard a single adult express regret that, as a child, they learnt another language. Jenny Adolphe B.A. Dip Teach. Principal - Fun French Sydney University's Brain & Mind Research Institute director, Ian Hickie says: "You end up with a better overall brain function as a consequence of the challenge of learning an additional language in those early pre-school to primary school years". Not only does brain power increase in bilinguals but those who learn a second language at a younger age are more likely have advanced grey matter. The ability to learn a second language is highest between birth and age 6, then undergoes a steady and inexorable decline.
